One child killed and 25 police officers injured in a powerful explosion inside a police station in Pakistan

Peshawar: A powerful explosion devastated a police station in the northwest Pakistan Thursday in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, killing one child and injuring 25 people, mostly police officers.

The incident occurred at Swabi police station, about 70 kilometers from Peshawar.

According to an initial report received by the Police Central Office, the explosion apparently occurred “due to a short circuit” inside a warehouse on the first floor of the police station.

Rescue and firefighting teams immediately rushed to the spot and began transferring the injured police officers to Bacha Khan Medical Center, where an emergency was imposed.

There are multiple injuries and “the top of the building has collapsed…” police officials said.

One child was killed and 25 others, mostly police officers, were injured in the explosion, authorities said.

The explosion affected the building, which caught fire, but was put out after the immediate response of firefighters.

A senior Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provincial government official clarified that the explosion at the police station was not a terrorist act.

According to the official, who asked to remain anonymous, “explosives confiscated during multiple operations detonated accidentally due to a malfunction, despite plans for their controlled disposal somewhere safe outside.” Rescue officials say they have so far pulled 12 injured people from the rubble and expect more.

KPK Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur expressed condolences over the death of a child in the explosion. He announced cash compensation for the family of the murdered boy.

The prime minister directed the divisional and district administrations to begin rescue operations to ensure that medical assistance was provided to the injured in time.
