Farooq Abdullah has put an end to speculation by announcing a pre-poll alliance between the National Conference and the Congress. This announcement came after Rahul Gandhi and Malikarjun Kharge met him at his residence. The National Conference has declared a pre-poll alliance with the Congress and the CPI(M) in Jammu and Kashmir, ahead of the Assembly elections scheduled for September 18.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, accompanied by Congress president Malikarjun Kharge, visited the residence of Dr Farooq Abdullah in Srinagar before leaving for Jammu. Rahul was on a two-day visit to the Union Territory.
Former Prime Minister Omar Abdullah and several party leaders were also present at the meeting. Soon after Rahul Gandhi left Abdullah’s residence, Farooq Abdullah addressed the media to announce the National Conference’s pre-poll alliance with the Congress and the CPI(M).
The National Conference president said, “There will be an alliance between the two parties to fill the 90 Assembly seats. The paperwork is expected to be finalised by this evening. The Congress, NC and CPI(M) will join hands. We are united in our efforts and will contest the elections together. We are optimistic that statehood will be restored. Our doors remain open for all.”
Earlier, Rahul Gandhi had expressed the commitment of his party and the INDIA bloc for the early restoration of statehood in J&K.
Rahul Gandhi, leader of the opposition and chief of the Congress party, said: “Our top priority is to restore the statehood of Jammu and Kashmir at the earliest. Though we had hoped that this would happen before the elections, we are hopeful that the statehood will be restored soon. This is an unprecedented situation since independence, where a state has been downgraded to a union territory. Our primary concern is to restore their democratic rights. The Congress party stands in solidarity with the people of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.”
Congress president Malikarjun Kharge also spoke on the occasion and said, “We want to keep the entire opposition united.”
Congress president Malikarjun Kharge said, “The BJP failed to ensure elections in J&K. The party announced the elections under pressure following the Supreme Court’s directions. I want to place on record that the BJP can no longer suppress the voices of the people in J&K. The Congress is committed to working for the welfare of the people of J&K. The BJP’s claims that after Article 370, terrorism had been eradicated in J&K have come to nothing. Infiltration has increased and terrorist incidents have also seen a spike.”
The Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir will begin on September 18 and will be held in three phases and the results will be declared on October 4.
