Why and when was Maharashtra bandh called? Learn here

Maharashtra Bandh: A round of political rhetoric continues over the Badlapur issue in Maharashtra. Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray has said that two girls from a school were allegedly sexually assaulted. People observing the politics behind the protest in Badlapur on Tuesday are either abnormal or are the protectors of the culprits.

Why was it called Maharashtra bandh?

Uddhav Thackeray said there was no political intention behind the bandh called by the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) faction on August 24. The aim of the bandh is to create awareness that women’s safety should be a priority and also to “wake up” the government.
While speaking to the media, the Shiv Sena chief said that those who feel that they are politically motivated behind the Badlapur protest are either abnormal or protectors of the culprits.

What happened in Badlapur?

Thousands of people took to the streets and railway tracks in the town of Badlapur in Thane district on Tuesday to protest against the alleged sexual assault of two four-year-old girls on the premises of a local school. Angry parents, local residents and others blocked railway tracks and vandalised the school where two female students were allegedly sexually assaulted by a male attendant last week.

How many people were arrested in the Badlapur case?

At least 25 policemen were injured in stone-pelting incidents at the railway station and other parts of Badlapur during the protest. Police have arrested 72 people in connection with the violence during this period. Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Wednesday said the protests in Badlapur were politically motivated and most of the protesters were outsiders. MVA had called for a Maharashtra bandh on August 24 to protest against the alleged sexual harassment of the two girls.
