There is another destination in the Middle East that attracts Indian tourists, and it is not Qatar.

Indian tourists flock to this Middle Eastern country, which boasts picturesque mountains and a pristine coastline. The people are wonderful and it has witnessed a 70% increase in Indian tourist arrivals.

Oman has emerged as one of the top tourist destinations for Indian travellers with over 6 lakh Indians visiting the country last year, a 70 per cent increase compared to 2023, Undersecretary of Oman’s Ministry of Heritage and Tourism Azzan Qassim Al Busaidi told PTI.

“We hope to overcome [that] “This year we have seen a 15 per cent increase in arrivals,” Busaidi told PTI on August 22. “The closeness and proximity between Oman and India makes one feel almost at home,” he added. “This momentum shows no signs of slowing down, and the first five months of 2024 have already seen a 15 per cent increase in arrivals,” he explained.

According to Al Busaidi, India is Oman’s largest tourist market, outside the Gulf Cooperation Council countries. Of the 400,000 tourists who visited Oman last year, 625,000 were from India.

Adventure sports are gaining popularity among tourists in Oman and tourism is one of the five priority areas for the country’s administration as part of its Vision 2040 plan. “We are now seeing more diversity in traveler segments,” Al Busaidi said. “We plan to continue engaging with Indian travel agents. We hope this will play a major role in the growth we are looking for,” he said.

The regulatory framework on both sides (India and Oman) is very flexible and very open, he said. The number of travel restrictions on both sides is at a minimum level, he shared.

“I met with the Indian tourism minister yesterday. The meeting was very positive and constructive,” he added. Oman offers visas on arrival to Indian citizens who have US or Schengen visas, he said.

The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism of the Sultanate of Oman toured Mumbai on Thursday, reinforcing Oman’s position as a top destination for Indian travelers seeking luxury, culture and adventure.

The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism has announced plans to further enhance Oman’s appeal in India through residential workshops, consumer promotions and luxury brand campaigns.

These initiatives are designed to elevate Oman’s status as a top-tier destination and ensure that it remains the top choice for Indian travellers seeking a luxury getaway, he said.
