Max Verstappen outlines his retirement plan ahead of his 200th Formula 1 race

Max Verstappen will contest his 200th Formula 1 race in the Netherlands on Sunday and the Dutch driver has clarified that he is already more than halfway through his career. On Thursday, when asked if he saw himself reaching 400, he replied with a resounding “no”, something that could be considered normal given that both Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso are still active on the circuit at 39 and 40 years old respectively.

“Easy and easy. So we’re halfway there for sure,” added the champion, whose contract with Red Bull runs until 2028.

Verstappen made his debut in 2015 as the youngest F1 driver in history, aged 17 years and 166 days. In 2016, he became the youngest race winner, aged 18 years and 228 days.

“It’s been an incredible race,” he added. “200 doesn’t seem like it, but we’re doing a lot of races a year, so we add them up pretty quickly.”

Verstappen added that he would like to take a look at the new regulations that come into force in 2026 and thus keep his future plans open. He highlighted that his first win with Red Bull in Spain and his first championship victory in 2021 have been the highlights of his career so far.

“I’m not going into this weekend saying we’re going to win the race,” he said. “I just want to have a clean weekend, understand the car a bit more, learn from it. Of course, we’ve analysed a lot during the break and we’ll try to do things a bit differently or better. And of course during the weekend we’ll find out how it’s going to go,” he concluded ahead of the weekend’s race.
