Times Now Digital spoke to Dr Rajesh Kumar Reddy Adapala, Consultant Urooncologist, Asian Institute of Urooncology and Robotic Surgery to understand the risk factors and preventive measures associated with this condition.

“Age itself is the biggest risk factor for prostate cancer. It is a disease that primarily affects older people and more than three-quarters of cases occur in men over 65,” he said.

He also listed a couple more risk factors that could lead to this disease.

  • Genetic predisposition:Men with a family history of prostate cancer are two to three times more likely to develop prostate cancer
  • CareerAfrican Americans are more likely to develop prostate cancer than other ethnic groups.
  • Metabolic syndrome:It is the combination of obesity, high blood sugar levels, high blood pressure and excess cholesterol. It is a risk factor for many types of cancer, including prostate cancer.

How to stay protected?

As already mentioned, there is no proven way to reduce the risk of prostate cancer. However, by following a healthy diet and leading a healthy lifestyle, lifestyle It may reduce the risk of prostate cancer.

  1. Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as walnuts, flax seeds, chia seeds, and fish, may reduce the risk of prostate cancer.
  2. Foods rich in antioxidants, such as fresh vegetables with natural colorants like tomatoes, broccoli, carrots and beets, as well as fresh fruits, have been found to have anti-cancer properties.
  3. Avoid unhealthy diets such as saturated fats, red meat and grilled meats.
  4. Maintaining a normal body mass index (below 30) through diet and exercise may reduce the risk of prostate cancer.
  5. Healthy habits such as exposure to sunlight, taking vitamin D supplements whenever necessary and avoiding smoking are also recommended to reduce the risk of cancer.
  6. Some medications, such as finasteride or dutasteride, have been shown to reduce the risk of developing prostate cancer. However, it is important to note that they can have side effects and may interfere with PSA levels and make it difficult to detect prostate cancer early.

Therefore, the best way forward is to detect prostate cancer at early stages and achieve maximum cure. According to recommendations, men should be screened for prostate cancer starting at age 50. If there is a positive family history, it is recommended to be screened a little earlier.
