5G and 6G rollout will spur growth to become a developed nation, says Department of Transportation secretary | News

After 5G, India is now gearing up for the rollout of 6G that will spur the growth needed to attain developed nation status, Telecom Secretary Neeraj Mittal said on Wednesday.

Mittal said the government has replaced the 150-year-old Telegraph Act with a new Telecom Act that is expected to stand the test of time for the next 20 to 30 years.

“5G technology has already been implemented. Now we are planning for 6G. All of these will stimulate growth to achieve the developed nation status that we aspire for,” he said while speaking at an industry PR event, Prana.

Mittal said the technology race will not stop and policymakers must visit global manufacturing hubs in countries like Vietnam and China and coordinate their efforts to replicate India’s success stories.

“I think the 12 (industrial) cities that the government has announced will be able to do it. I think if we can do it in 100 years, in 2047, we will not let down future generations,” he said.

Last month, the Union Cabinet approved 12 new industrial cities in 10 states to boost the domestic manufacturing industry with an estimated investment of Rs 28,602 crore. The projects have been strategically planned along six major corridors.

These industrial areas will be located at Khurpia in Uttrakhand, Rajpura-Patiala in Punjab, Dighi in Maharashtra, Palakkad in Kerala, Agra and Prayagraj in UP, Gaya in Bihar, Zaheerabad in Telangana, Orvakal and Kopparthy in AP, and Jodhpur-Pali in Rajasthan.

Mittal said foreign companies have their Global Capability Centres (GCCs) in India, which are growing at 10-12 per cent annually.
