BJP trying to manipulate polls via Independents: Omar Abdullah

National Conference (NC) Vice President Omar Abdullahwho submitted his nomination from Ganderbal constituency On Wednesday, in central Kashmir, he accused Indian People’s Party (BJP) of use independent candidates to manipulate the assembly elections.

Abdullah, while appealing to the Ganderbal electorate, removed his skullcap and urged them to uphold the dignity of his cap.

“The BJP is making a concerted effort to rig these elections through independent candidates. They want as many independent candidates as possible to be elected from Jammu and Kashmir as their aim is to form the government with their help later,” Abdullah said. After the repeal of the Article 370 In August 2019, Abdullah was jailed along with others and when he was released in September 2020, he had maintained until recently that he would not contest elections in a Union Territory. He had compared the post of chief minister in the UT to that of municipal commissioner of an extremely weak municipality. However, soon after the elections were announced, NC decided to field Abdullah as its star candidate.

Abdullah said that the electorate of Jammu and Kashmir will reject the politics of the BJP and none of its conspiracies will succeed in the upcoming three-phase elections beginning on September 18. “The people’s vote will speak and the BJP’s attempts to manipulate the outcome of the elections will fail,” Abdullah said. “I request the people of Ganderbal to give me a chance to serve them. The dignity and honour of my cap is in the hands of the people of Ganderbal,” Abdullah said.

Abdullah confronts his former party colleague Ishfaq Jabbar in the Ganderbal constituency, who had won the assembly elections here in 2014 and had recently formed his own political party.

“In 2014, I had given this seat to Ishfaq Jabbar. If I had contested the 2014 elections, Ishfaq Jabbar would not have won. I gave up the seat because I had made a promise to him, but he did not fulfil it,” Abdullah said. The former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister said that after 2014, development works in Ganderbal have stopped and this betrayal has forced him to re-enter the political arena.
