Area under paddy increased by 2.22% to 41.35 million hectares so far this kharif season | Agriculture

The area sown to paddy has increased by 2.22 per cent to 41.35 million hectares so far in the ongoing kharif (summer) season 2024-25, the agriculture ministry said on Monday.

In the same period last year, the area under rice cultivation was 40.45 million hectares.

Sowing of paddy, the main kharif crop, begins with the onset of southwest monsoon from June, and harvesting takes place from September.

Additionally, the area sown with pulses increased to 12.858 million hectares as of Sept. 23 of the current season, from 119.28 million hectares sown with pulses in the same period last year, the ministry said in a statement.

The area sown under ‘arhar’ and ‘moong’ reported higher at 46.50 lakh hectares and 35.46 lakh hectares, respectively, while the area under urad was slightly lower at 3.073 lakh hectares so far in the current season.

The area under coarse cereals and ‘Shree Anna’ (millets) increased to 19.255 million hectares from 18.607 million hectares in the same period last year.

Among coarse grains, the area under maize increased from 84.65 lakh hectares to 88.06 lakh hectares.

The area sown to oilseeds increased marginally to 193.84 lakh hectares so far this kharif season from 19.092 lakh hectares in the same period last year.

Among cash crops, area under sugarcane increased marginally to 5.768 million hectares from 5.711 million hectares, area under cotton increased to 11.276 million hectares from 12.371 million hectares, while area under jute and mesta remained lower at 574,000 hectares as against 667,000 hectares.

The total area sown under all kharif crops remained high at 110.463 million hectares, compared to 108.826 million hectares in the same period last year.
