After ‘Aata’, Pakistan now faces water and electricity shortage | World news

KARACHI: Karachi residents took to the streets on University Road to protest the ongoing water and electricity shortage in the PIB Colony area, ARY News reported. The protest, which began due to the lack of essential services, has resulted in the closure of both roads leading to Hassan Square, near the Newtown police station. This has caused significant traffic congestion in the surrounding areas.

Separately, a leak in the water line in the old Sabzi Mandi area caused flooding on the road, disrupting the flow of traffic, according to ARY News. Negotiations between protesters and police officers have so far been unsuccessful, and protesters have vowed to continue their protests until their demands for an adequate supply of water and electricity are met.

Recently, the main line was damaged during the BRT project works. According to ARY News, despite Water Corporation’s claims that they would resolve the leaks in the lines, the issue remains unaddressed. It is pertinent to mention here that the citizens of Karachi are suffering from water shortage as the supply has been severely affected for the last four days in several areas including Nazimabad, North Nazimabad and Gulshan-e-Iqbal.

Furthermore, residents of PIB Colony, Garden, Sadar, Ranchore Line, Landhi, Korangi, Shah Faisal Colony, Malir, Gulistan, Johar and other areas are also facing severe water shortage. The Water Company claimed that line repair work had been completed at three different locations, but citizens still faced water shortages.

Earlier, power riots broke out in many areas of Karachi on October 5, where protests by residents against the disruption of electricity and water supply to their localities caused severe traffic jams in major parts of the city, heaping miseries on commuters. who remained trapped on the roads and streets for hours.

Hundreds of vehicles moved bumper to bumper at a snail’s pace on a portion of MA Jinnah Road and Shahrah-i-Quaideen for hours, further causing traffic jams on connecting roads and streets, including Preedy Street and Sharea Faisal. Residents of Jacob Lines, including women and children, took to the streets shortly after noon to protest the power outage in their surroundings and blocked Corridor III, without signal, from Saddar to Peoples Chowrangi.

The protesters claimed that K-Electric had cut off power supply in their locality three days ago for non-payment of bills, which they considered excessive and unjustified.
