At least 51 dead in Iranian coal mine explosion

A gas explosion at a coal mine in Iran’s South Khorasan province has killed at least 51 people and injured 20, Iranian state media reported Sunday.

The accident was caused by a methane gas explosion in two blocks, B and C, of the mine operated by the Madanjoo company, state media reported.

“Seventy-six percent of the country’s coal comes from this region and eight to 10 large companies are working in the region, including the Madanjoo company,” South Khorasan provincial governor Ali Akbar Rahimi told state television on Sunday.

The rescue operation in Block B has been completed. Of the 47 workers in the block, 30 were killed and 17 injured, Rahimi said earlier.

Rescue operations in Block C have already begun. The methane density in the block is high and the operation will last around three to four hours, he added.

There were 69 workers in the blocks at the time of the explosion, state television reported.

“Seventeen injured people were taken to hospital and 24 people are still missing,” the head of Iran’s Red Crescent was quoted as saying on Sunday.

The explosion occurred at 9 p.m. (1730 GMT) on Saturday, state media reported.

President Masoud Pezeshkian expressed his condolences to the families of the victims. “I have spoken with the ministers and we will do everything possible to follow up on the situation,” Pezeshkian said in televised remarks.
