At least a shadow over Joe Biden’s election campaign: the US president’s son, Hunter, has been found guilty of a weapons crime

After just three hours of deliberation, the jury’s verdict in the criminal weapons trial was: guilty on all charges. The penalty could be up to 7 years in prison or a fine of up to $750,000, although judges tend to be lenient toward first-time offenders.

Hunter Biden left the courtroom without comment. He pleaded not guilty at the beginning of the trial. President Joe Biden said in a statement that he accepted the verdict on his son. He had already made it known beforehand that he could not forgive his son. He highlighted his love and pride in Hunter Biden, who is now free from addiction. “Many families can understand the sentiment,” the president said.

Hunter Biden has been on trial in Delaware since last week because he hid his drug addiction from law enforcement authorities by purchasing a firearm. In October 2018, Hunter Biden purchased the gun at a store at his father’s home in Wilmington, Delaware. At the time he was addicted to crack cocaine, as the prosecution was able to sufficiently demonstrate, including through text messages to his then-lover, the widow of his late brother Beau Biden. A few days after purchasing the revolver, Hunter Biden purchased crack cocaine from a local dealer.

The dark side of the Biden family

As a witness, Hallie Biden described how her brother-in-law and then-lover struggled with drug addiction. How she started an affair with him and she did crack and cocaine with him to distract herself from her husband’s pain. And how, while she was looking for drugs, she found the gun in the glove compartment of her car and frantically threw it into a trash can in the parking lot of an upscale department store in Wilmington.

When she told Hunter Biden, he told her to remove the gun immediately. He followed the instructions, but a homeless man who had been scavenging through the trash grabbed him. Hallie Biden later reported the loss to the police; This is how the confusing story came to light that now ends with a guilty verdict for Hunter Biden.

The trial takes a deep look at a dark side of the Biden family’s story: desperation, alcohol abuse, drug addiction and the emotional trauma that comes with it. Hunter Biden’s daughter, Naomi Biden, testified alongside her sister-in-law Hallie Biden. She tried to relieve her father. She testified under oath that she did not see him using drugs in 2018. The fact that there was no concrete evidence of drug use during the time the gun was purchased was also the defense’s unsuccessful argument.

Republicans are in a position to attack

The legal problems are not over for Hunter Biden. In September he begins a second criminal trial against him in Los Angeles, this time for tax evasion.

Republicans remained surprisingly silent during the gun trial. The focus on gun control and the fact that the justice system is taking action against a member of the Biden family does not fit the narrative of Republicans who want to relax gun laws and portray Donald Trump as a victim of the justice system. They have a completely different approach. There is currently an impeachment investigation underway in Congress against Hunter Biden and his uncle James Biden. Republicans want to prove, so far without success, that the two made corrupt deals in Ukraine and China with Joe Biden’s knowledge when he was vice president.

Last week, three House committees demanded that the Justice Department file a lawsuit against Hunter Biden for making false statements in the impeachment process.

The turbulence surrounding the president’s delinquent son will continue for some time. It can be assumed that they at least cast a shadow over Joe Biden’s election campaign.
