Mira Murati, CTO of ChatGPT maker OpenAI, resigns, CEO Altman reacts…

Mira Murati, technology director of the manufacturer ChatGPT Open AIis leaving the AI giant, marking the latest in a series of executive departures this year.

Murati announced his decision in a post on unknown (formerly Twitter), expressing his desire to “create the time and space to do [her] own exploration.”

“I want to start by thanking Sam and Greg for their trust in me to lead the technical organization and for their support over the years,” Murati wrote in a note.

“For now, my main goal is to do everything in my power to ensure a smooth transition, maintaining the momentum we have created,” he added. “I will always be grateful for the opportunity to build and work alongside this extraordinary team.”

Hello everyone,

I have something to share with you. After much reflection, I have made the difficult decision to leave OpenAI.

My six and a half years with the OpenAI team have been an extraordinary privilege. While I will express my gratitude to many people in the coming days, I want to start by thanking Sam and Greg for their trust in me to lead the technical organization and for their support over the years.

There is never an ideal time to walk away from a place you hold dear, but this time feels right. Our recent releases of speech-to-speech and OpenAI 01 usher in a new era in interaction and intelligence – achievements made possible by your ingenuity and dexterity. We’re not just creating smarter models, we’re fundamentally changing the way AI systems learn and reason through complex problems. We take security research from theory to practical applications, creating models that are more robust, aligned, and steerable than ever. Our work has made cutting-edge AI research intuitive and accessible, developing technology that adapts and evolves based on everyone’s input. This success is a testament to our excellent teamwork, and it is thanks to their brilliance, dedication and commitment that OpenAI is at the pinnacle of AI innovation.

I step away because I want to create the time and space to do my own exploration. For now, my main goal is to do everything in my power to ensure a smooth transition while maintaining the momentum we have created.

I will always be grateful for the opportunity to build and work alongside this extraordinary team. Together, we have pushed the boundaries of scientific understanding in our quest to improve human well-being. While I may no longer be in the trenches with you, I will still support you all.

Altman’s reaction to Murati’s resignation

“Mira has been instrumental in the progress and growth of OpenAI over the past 6.5 years; she has been a hugely significant factor in our development from an unknown research lab to a major company,” Altman wrote in a note.

“When Mira informed me this morning that she was leaving, I was saddened but of course I support her decision. Over the past year, she has been building a strong bench of leaders who will continue our progress,” he said.

Two more resignations

Just hours after Murati’s announcement, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman revealed that two additional senior technical leaders, Barret Zoph, vice president of research, and Bob McGrew, director of research, had also resigned.

“I am very grateful to all of them for their contributions,” Altman added.

Leadership changes

Mark Chen has been promoted to new vice president of research and will lead the research department alongside chief scientist Jakub Pachocki. Matt Knight will take on the role of chief information security officer.

“This has been our long-term succession plan for Bob someday; although it will happen sooner than we thought, I couldn’t be more excited for Mark to take on the role. Mark obviously has deep technical experience, but he has also learned how to be a leader and manager in a very impressive way over the last few years,” Altman wrote.

Josh Achiam will take on a new role as Chief of Mission Alignment. Additionally, Kevin and Srinivas will continue to lead the Applied team.

“Leadership changes are a natural part of companies, especially ones that grow so fast and are so demanding. Obviously I’m not going to pretend that it’s natural for this to be so abrupt, but we are not a normal company, and I think the reasons Mira explained to me (there’s never a good time, anything that wasn’t abrupt would have leaked, and she wanted to do this while OpenAI was booming) it makes sense.
