GSTN restores data of July and August 2017, GST returns data

GST Network on Sunday said monthly return data for July and August 2017, the initial months of Goods and Services Tax implementation, has been restored on the portal.

The GSTN last week said it is implementing its data policy, according to which taxpayers’ data will be retained only for seven years. Therefore, GST return data will not be available beyond 7 years to taxpayers and will be archived.

Thus, on August 1, 2024, the returns submitted corresponding to July 2017 were archived and on September 1, 2024, the data for August 2017 were archived.

However, the trade and industry had sought more time before implementing this policy so that they could download their relevant data from the GST portal for any future reference.

In a notice to taxpayers, GSTN on Sunday said 17-18 GST returns were again available based on feedback received from trade and industry.

“…in view of the requests received from the merchant due to the difficulties encountered, the data has been restored back to the portal. We recommend that you download and save the data if necessary, as the archiving policy will be implemented again after give advance information,” GSTN said.

As per the GST law, taxpayers cannot file their GST returns after the expiry of a period of three years from the due date of such return.

As per the data policy of the GST portal, taxpayer data will be retained for only seven years.

The GST was implemented on July 1, 2017.
