What you will need
Hamburger Helper Ingredients:
Ground beef, milk, and cheese combine to create the best creamy, cheesy macaroni. See recipe card below for exact measurements.
- Ground meat: Since we’re adding milk and cheese, I kept the meat lean and chose organic meat.
- Seasoning: The meat is seasoned with kosher salt and paprika.
- Onion and garlic enhances the flavor and makes the pasta more aromatic.
- Ketchup Balances the richness of the meat and cheese. Two tablespoons of tomato paste can be used instead.
- Worcestershire sauce Adds a touch of acidity and elevates the overall flavor.
- Chicken soup: The pasta is cooked in broth to give it flavor, beef broth can also be used.
- 2% milk Adds creaminess while keeping the batter light.
- Pasta: Choose a short pasta shape, such as rotini, cavatappi or snails. If you use elbow-shaped macaroni, cook the pasta for 6 to 8 minutes at a time so it doesn’t get soggy.
- Part-skim cheddar cheese: Stir in the cheese at the end and let it melt for a rich, cheesy spread.
How to make homemade hamburger
Here we explain how to make hamburgers step by step. My favorite part is that it is cooked in one pot. The recipe card contains complete instructions..
- Brown the meat In a large, deep skillet or pot over medium-high heat. Season with salt and paprika and cook until browned.
- Aromatics and Sauces: Sauté the onion and garlic for a few minutes and add the tomato sauce and Worcestershire sauce. Lower the heat and cook until the sauces reduce and caramelize.
- Cook the pasta: Add the broth and pasta to the pot and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to medium, cover the pan and cook until the pasta is almost tender and the liquid is almost completely absorbed.
- Milk: Add the milk, cover the pan and cook over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, until the pasta is al dente and most of the milk has been absorbed.
- Cheese: Remove the pan from the heat and add the cheese.
Variations
- Ground meat: Substitute ground turkey, ground chicken, or ground bison for the ground beef.
- Dairy Free: Hamburger Helper is best with milk as it gives it a creamy texture, but you can substitute with a dairy-free alternative such as unsweetened rice milk and use a dairy-free cheese such as Violife, which I find melts the best.
- Soy-Free: If you have a soy allergy, you can omit the Worcestershire sauce or substitute it with coconut aminos.
- Gluten free: Use your favorite gluten-free pasta and gluten-free Worcestershire sauce.
- Cheese: Swap the cheddar cheese for shredded mozzarella or Monterey Jack.
- Pasta with cheeseburger: Chop the tomato, pickles and onion, mix in a bowl with a little pickle juice and pour on top.
- Macaroni and cheese: If you want it cheesier, like macaroni and cheese, add more cheddar cheese.
- Add vegetables: Diced bell peppers, carrots, spinach, broccoli, or mushrooms would work great.
- Spices: Experiment with different spices. For a smoky flavor, use smoked paprika. For a spicy flavor, add chili powder or just garlic powder instead of fresh garlic.
