The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has launched IITM School Connect A program whose objective is to help school students make informed decisions about their higher education and their professional life.
As part of the program, students are offered two certification courses in “Data Science and Artificial Intelligence” and “Electronic Systems.”
The two courses have been designed by IIT Madras faculty, with content specifically tailored to the school’s students, as reported in a press release. The certificate programs are open to all Grade 11 and 12 students from the partner schools.

Course highlights include:
- Videos of recorded lectures
- Practical training
- Live interactions
- Tasks
- Computer-based assessment for certification
The online courses are also intended to provide practical professional experience to 11th and 12th grade students, the statement added. The courses will be taught over eight weeks.
It is worth noting that registration for the next group has already started on September 16, 2024 and will close on October 4, 2024. The course will start on October 21, 2024.
Additionally, schools interested in enrolling students for the next cohort must do so by September 30, 2024.
It is worth mentioning here that over 500 schools across India are partnering with IIT Madras, and around 11,000 students across the country have already enrolled in the first batch.
Professor Andrew Thangaraj, Chairperson, Centre for Digital Outreach and Education (CODE) at IIT Madras, said that two key courses, namely Data Science and AI, and Electronic Systems, are currently being offered, adding that there are plans to introduce more such practical programmes in the coming months, catering to a wider range of interests.

Speaking about this programme, Professor Prathap Haridoss, Dean of Academic Courses, IIT Madras, highlighted that students pursuing the Data Science course have been involved in hands-on projects, using data sets to extract meaningful insights.
“Courses like these expose students to diverse disciplines and help children identify their interests and strengths,” she added.
Professor Vignesh Muthuvijayan, coordinator of the undergraduate faculty at IIT Madras, said the response from schools and students has been very positive so far.
