Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT) Roorkee has signed two important agreements with Samarkand State University (SamSU) giving a boost to Indo-Uzbek academic collaboration.
The two agreements include a Letter of Intent to establish a Joint Master’s Degree Programme (JMDP) and a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to foster research and collaboration in hydrology, environmental sciences, sustainable energy and SDGs.
The JMDP, developed between the Department of Hydrology at IIT Roorkee and the Department of Hydrometeorology at SamSU, will address critical global issues such as water scarcity, climate change and environmental degradation.
It will also equip SamSU students and faculty with advanced expertise in water resource management and sustainability modeling.
It will also enable IIT Roorkee to leverage its extensive experience and expertise to provide practical solutions to real-world problems in hydrology and related fields in Uzbekistan, as reported in a press release.
Meanwhile, the agreements were signed by Professor Khalmuradov Rustam Ibragimovich, Rector of SamSU, and Professor Kamal Kishore Pant, Director of IIT Roorkee, in the presence of professors from both universities.

Addressing the event, Professor Pant said the collaboration will contribute to finding sustainable solutions to water and environmental issues, enhancing academic excellence and social impact.
Professor Ibragimovich also highlighted that the agreements underline the commitment of both institutions to address urgent climate challenges and create a platform for innovative research and education.
Other key speakers at the event included Professor Vimal Chandra Srivastava, Dean, International Relations, IIT Roorkee, who highlighted the importance of the partnership in expanding IIT Roorkee’s international presence and fostering cross-cultural academic exchanges.

For his part, Dr. Muhtor Nasirov, Vice-Rector for International Relations at SAMSU, expressed his interest in the potential of collaboration to boost global environmental sustainability and joint innovations.
Professor Naveen Navani, Dean, Academic Affairs, IIT Roorkee, said the MoUs will create new opportunities for student and faculty exchanges, research initiatives and knowledge sharing.
