After the completion of Paris Olympics In 2024, India’s growth as a sporting culture was widely discussed. The Indian contingent failed to win medals in disciplines such as boxing and badminton. India won only six medals in the world sports competition (5 bronze and 1 silver). The Indian contingent had its eyes set on the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, scheduled for 2026, but its medal hopes have suffered a major setback.
Cricket, hockey and wrestling removed from CWG 2026
In a blow to India’s medal prospects at the Commonwealth Games, key sports such as hockey, badminton, wrestling, cricket and shooting were dropped from the 2026 edition by host city Glasgow, which revealed a list cut from 10 disciplines to maintain the event. economic.
Table tennis, squash, cricket, netball and road racing have also been scrapped in a bid to limit cost and streamline logistics, given only four venues will host the entire competition. The total number of Games events will be nine fewer compared to the 2022 Birmingham edition.

The 23rd edition of the mega-event is scheduled to take place from 23 July to 2 August, marking Glasgow’s return as a venue after 12 years, following the 2014 edition.
“The sports program will include Athletics and Para Athletics (Track and Field), Swimming and Para Swimming, Artistic Gymnastics, Track Cycling and Para Cycling, Netball, Weightlifting and Para Powerlifting, Boxing, Judo, Bowls and Para Bowls, and 3×3 Basketball and 3×3 Wheelchair Basketball,” the Commonwealth Games Federation said in a statement.
“The Games will be held at four venues: Scotstoun Stadium, Tollcross International Swimming Centre, Emirates Arena including the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, and the Scottish Event Campus (SEC). Athletes and support staff will be accommodated in hotel accommodations.“he added.
The list is a major setback for India’s medal prospects as most of the country’s medals came from disciplines eliminated in the previous editions. Filming was never expected to return after being removed from the Birmingham schedule four years ago due to logistics.
Ten sports that will be presented at the CWG in Glasgow
Announcing the Glasgow calendar, the CGF said that “Glasgow 2026 will feature a program of 10 sports concentrated across four venues within an eight-mile corridor.”
This ruled out delisting as the Barry Buddon center in Dundee, home of CWG 2014, is more than 100 kilometers from Glasgow.

Glasgow Green and the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre, which hosted hockey and wrestling in 2014, have been removed from the list of venues, while the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, where badminton was held that year, will this time be used only for cycling.
In addition to the cost, the exclusion of hockey could also be due to the fact that the Games are organized close to the World Cup that is scheduled two weeks later, from August 15 to 30 in Wavre, Belgium and Amstelveen, Netherlands. The Australian state of Victoria was the original host of the 2026 edition, but withdrew last year due to rising costs. Scotland then stepped in to save the Games.
