Tennis: American third seed Jessica Pegula made a spectacular comeback after losing the first set in a tiebreaker to enter the fourth round of the China Open tennis tournament here on Sunday.
Pegula cruised to a 6-7(9), 6-1, 6-2 victory over Russia’s Veronika Kudermetova in the third round. Pegula has won 17 of her last 19 matches, including her title defense in Toronto and the finals in Cincinnati and the US Open.
The American player will face the Spanish Paola Badosa, seeded number 15, who defeated the Serbian Rebecca Shramkova 7-5, 7-5, in the fourth round. In another match, Poland’s Magdalena Frech, seeded 23, recovered from a poor start to beat 12 seed Diana Schnyder 0-6, 6-3, 6-4.
In the men’s category, local player Bu Yunchaoqte caused the surprise by defeating the bronze medalist of the Paris Olympic Games, Lorenzo Musetti, 6-2, 6-4. This is the 22-year-old’s first win against a top-20 ranked player.
