Days after Kajol’s The Trial co-star Noor Malabika Das was found dead in her Mumbai apartment, her family members have revealed that she had been struggling with depression and was dissatisfied with her career in the film industry. Noor, originally from Karimganj town in Assam, near the Bangladesh border, had moved to Mumbai with hopes of pursuing an acting career.

Speaking to The Times Of India from Karimganj, the actor’s paternal aunt Arati Das shared that Noor went to Mumbai with ‘big hopes’ to pursue a career in acting and was fighting hard to achieve her goal. However, she was ‘unsatisfied’ with her achievements. Arati claimed that this might have driven her to take the extreme step.

The police found Noor’s decomposed body in her Lokhandwala Apartment after neighbours reported a foul smell to the Oshiwara police station, leading to a suspicion of suicide. According to a report in Mid Day, despite attempts to contact her family, no one responded, prompting the police, with the help of the Mamdani Health and Education Trust NGO, to perform her last rites on Sunday.

Before trying her hand at acting, Noor was an airhostess. She made appearances in various projects like Walkaman, Siskiyaan, Teekhi Chatni, Jaghanya Upaya, Charamsukh, Dekhi Andekhi, Backroad Hustle, among more. She was last seen in Kajol and Jisshu Sengupta’s The Trial.

After Noor’s death, All India Cine Workers Association has written a letter to Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, demanding a probe into her death. A part of the letter read, “Her untimely death is a poignant reminder of the disturbing trend of suicides within the Indian film fraternity. The recurrence of such tragic incidents within the Bollywood industry calls for a serious introspection and a thorough investigation into the underlying causes. It is imperative to explore all possible factors, including the potential for foul play, to ensure that the truth is brought to light and justice is served.”
