Wilmington: President of the United States Joe Biden The Prime Minister praised Narendra Modi Obama’s historic visit to Ukraine last month and his message of peace as the two leaders held wide-ranging talks that addressed the most pressing global challenges, including the situation in the war-torn country.
The US president received Modi at his personal home in Wilmington, Delaware, on Saturday afternoon, hours after the prime minister arrived in the US on a three-day visit.
In the talks, Biden conveyed to the Indian prime minister that the United States supports efforts to reform global institutions to reflect India’s important voice, including New Delhi’s permanent membership in a reformed U.N. Security Council, according to a joint fact sheet on the meeting.
While the talks between Modi and Biden focused primarily on bilateral relations, the two leaders also discussed key global challenges, including the Russia-Ukraine conflict and the situation in the Indo-Pacific, which has seen an increasing show of force by China.
The fact sheet notes that President Biden expressed his “immense appreciation” for India’s leadership role on the world stage, particularly Modi’s leadership in the G-20 and in the Global South and his commitment to strengthening the Quad to ensure a free, open and prosperous Indo-Pacific.
He said India is at the forefront of efforts to find solutions to the most pressing challenges, from supporting the global response to the COVID-19 pandemic to addressing the devastating consequences of conflicts around the world.
“President Biden praised Prime Minister Modi for his historic visits to Poland and Ukraine, the first by an Indian prime minister in decades, and for his message of peace and continued humanitarian support for Ukraine, including its energy sector, and for the importance of international law, including the United Nations Charter,” he said.
Modi is known to have briefed Biden on his visits to Moscow in July and kyiv last month.
In his talks with the Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky On August 23 in kyiv, Modi said both Ukraine and Russia should sit together without wasting any time to end the ongoing war and that India was ready to play an “active role” in restoring peace in the region.
The Prime Minister said India had been on the side of peace since the beginning of the conflict and would even like to personally contribute to a peaceful resolution of the crisis.
In their meeting, Modi and Biden reaffirmed their support for freedom of navigation and protection of commerce, including critical sea lanes in the Middle East, where India will assume joint leadership in 2025 of Combined Task Force 150 to work with Combined Maritime Forces to secure sea lanes in the Arabian Sea, the document said.
The leaders expressed their view that a closer partnership between the United States and India is vital to the success of efforts to build a cleaner, more inclusive, safer and more prosperous future for the planet, he added.
Modi and Biden also discussed ways to further strengthen India-US cooperation in areas of semiconductors, clean energy and defence.
“President Biden and Prime Minister Modi hailed a landmark agreement to establish a new semiconductor manufacturing facility focused on advanced sensing, communication and power electronics for national security, next-generation telecommunications and green energy applications,” the fact sheet said.
“The factory, which will be set up with the aim of manufacturing infrared, gallium nitride and silicon carbide semiconductors, will be made possible with the support of the India Semiconductor Mission as well as a strategic technology partnership between Bharat Semi, 3rdiTech and the US Space Force,” he said.
He said the leaders commended the combined efforts to facilitate resilient, secure and sustainable semiconductor supply chains, including through the creation of the GF Kolkata Power Centre by GlobalFoundries (GF).
They noted GF’s plans to explore long-term cross-border manufacturing and technology partnerships with India that will generate high-quality jobs in both countries, it said.
They also welcomed the new strategic partnership between the U.S. Department of State and the Indian Semiconductor Mission of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology in connection with the International Technology Security and Innovation (ITSI) Facility.
The Prime Minister and the President of the United States welcomed steps taken to build safe, secure and resilient supply chains for the US, Indian and international automotive markets, including through Ford Motor Company’s submission of a Letter of Intent to use its Chennai plant to manufacture products for export to global markets.
