Scandal unfolds: Netflix releases audition clip as real-life Martha sues for $170 million

Netflix has made available Jessica Gunning’s audition tape for the role of Martha in Richard Gadd’s gripping “true story” series about her encounter with an alleged stalker.

Emmy voting season is approaching, so this release is probably perfectly timed. But that comes just hours after Fiona Harvey, Martha’s real-life model, sued Netflix for $170 million.

Gunning recreates a scene from the first episode of *Baby Reindeer* in the 80-second short, in which Donny (Gadd) and Martha meet for coffee and Martha becomes enraged out of nowhere. Clerkenwell Films created the series, which is expected to be a serious awards contender. Netflix has promised to “strongly” refute Harvey’s claims.

Fiona Harvey is suing Netflix for negligence and defamation. Her case, which was filed in federal court in Los Angeles, claims that the show represents the “biggest lie in television history” about her.

“We intend to defend this matter vigorously and defend Richard Gadd’s right to tell his story,” Netflix said.

In its debut month on Netflix, *Baby Reindeer* attracted more than 60 million views. It also recently took home the Breakthrough Limited Series trophy at the Gotham TV Awards.
