Dhanbad News : On the seventh day of junior doctors’ strike in Kolkata protesting the brutality of the female junior doctor, a parallel OPD service was started on Thursday on the instructions of the hospital management near the Central Library of Shaheed Nirmal Mahato Medical College and Hospital (SNMMCH). The OPD service was paralysed at SNMMCH for the past six days. In parallel, at the OPD, senior doctors of the hospital provided medical counselling to the patients.
The patients breathed a sigh of relief
The patient breathed a sigh of relief after the parallel OPD service was started in the hospital. The first day was chaotic. As soon as the OPD started at 10 o’clock in the day, there was a rush of patients. The parallel OPD was carried out in the first shift till 12.30 pm and in the second shift from 3 pm to 5 pm. Please be informed that due to the strike of junior doctors, the OPD service at SNMMCH has been completely paralysed for the past seven days. Despite repeated requests from the management, the striking junior doctors are not allowing the OPD services to be restored.
Striking doctors returned due to the harshness of management
On receiving information about parallel operations by the OPD, a large number of striking junior doctors approached the central library at around 11 a.m. During this time, the director of the Medical College and other senior doctors were present. Before the striking doctors could do anything, the senior doctors reprimanded them and sent them all back.
A counter with six parallel OPD departments was installed
The first day of parallel OPD started with an hour delay due to chaos. Counters of Medicine, Surgery, Orthopedics, Paediatrics, Physiotherapy and PSM departments were set up. In this, services of some intern doctors were taken along with the senior doctor. 128 patients in Medicine, 112 in Surgery, 145 in Orthopedics and 94 patients in Paediatrics were registered for treatment. Besides, systematic vaccination service was provided to more than 20 children in PSM department. No patient came for physiotherapy.
Deepak from Hazaribagh Road received a medical consultation after five days
Hazaribagh Deepak Sharma, 14, a resident of Birni Purnanagar Road, was injured in a road accident. His leg was fractured. He was undergoing treatment at SNMMCH for a long time. He was later discharged. The leg is in a cast. Suddenly the pain in my legs increased at home. Five days ago the family took him to the hospital. Due to the strike of junior doctors, medical consultations were not available. Even after this, he reached the hospital on two different days. Due to the strike he had to return. Deepak received a medical consultation at the parallel OPD on Thursday.
Patients returned disappointed after the ENT and ophthalmology department failed to start.
The ENT and ophthalmology departments could not function in the parallel OPD on Thursday. Due to this, patients had to return disappointed. Karan Bahadur from Chirkunda has been visiting the hospital for the last four days to get his son’s eyes treated. On Thursday, he came to know about the parallel operation of the OPD through the newspaper. He came with his son but was turned away. According to the SNMMCH management, machines and equipment are required to start the ENT OPD service. It is not possible to install machines in the temporary OPD.
What services were paralyzed due to the strike?
Due to the strike, operating theatres in several hospital departments remained closed for the seventh day. On Thursday, no patients in various departments were operated on. In addition, other services were also affected.

Principal and in-charge superintendent of the Medical College, Dr Jyoti Ranjan Prasad, said that in view of the strike by junior doctors, a decision was taken to run the OPD in parallel. Keeping in view the sentiments of the patients and the problems they are facing, the hospital management has decided to run a parallel OPD.
