People gave names

The Name Your Skoda campaign, launched in February 2024, gave Skoda customers and fans a chance to choose the name of the new compact SUV that will be launched in India and globally in 2025. Through ‘Name Your Skoda’, participants suggested names for compact SUVs starting with the letter ‘K’ and ending with the one- or two-syllable letter ‘Q’, which is Skoda’s ICE SUV naming convention. The campaign received over 200,000 entries with over 24,000 unique names.

Kylaq

The new compact SUV, now called Kylaq, has been introduced as the “SUV for you”. This is Skoda Auto India’s first step into the compact SUV segment. This SUV is based on the MQB-A0-IN platform, which is similar to the Kushaq SUV and Slavia sedan. MQB-A0-IN has been developed exclusively for India by teams in India and the Czech Republic. In this regard, the focus has been on versatility, safety and mobility. Apart from this, special attention has been paid to localisation, low maintenance cost and robustness in the development of this SUV.

Expectations of the new SUV

The new compact SUV will be the first incarnation of the company’s strong and modern design language in India. It will also have high ground clearance and space around the wheels to tackle rough roads, giving the car SUV-like qualities. Its design will retain the signature language of Skoda’s SUVs and add details like the sophisticated and precise DRL light signature. The upcoming SUV will also have a hexagonal pattern on the sides and rear. The compact SUV is currently undergoing rigorous testing across India and the company is gearing up for production with an increase in local suppliers. Based on a large car platform, the compact SUV will have the “large car” feel in a compact footprint.

naming conventions

This tradition continues with the Kodiaq, the company’s first 7-seater luxury 4×4 launched in 2017. The name reflects the characteristics of both the Kodiak bear and the Kodiak Archipelago, located south of Alaska in the United States. This bear lives on the Kodiak Islands. The name reflects the beauty, grandeur and inaccessibility of the bear and the area it calls home. This legacy was later continued by the Skoda Kushaq, which takes its name from the Sanskrit word meaning emperor. Similarly, the new compact SUV, Skoda Kylaq, which is set to debut in India in 2025, will adopt a user-suggested name, following the naming convention of the Skoda SUV family.

Skoda cars in India

The Kushaq SUV made its global and Indian debut in July 2021 and the Slavia sedan in March 2022. Since then, these two India-developed cars have contributed significantly to Skoda Auto India’s sales. These cars have taken the least time to reach the milestone of selling more than 100,000 cars. Skoda Kylaq will be the third all-new, India-specific product developed by Skoda Auto India.

How many car models does Skoda currently sell in India?
