Mercedes-Benz assembly plant in Pune caught violating rules by MPCB

Mercedes-Benz worldwide and many car manufacturing OEMs in India are often under scrutiny by government agencies for failure to comply with mandatory norms. In a new development, Mercedes-Benz has been found guilty of not following pollution control guidelines set by the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB).

This revelation is particularly disturbing considering Mercedes-Benz’s position as an icon in the automotive industry. MPCB stated in strong words that the current failure to comply with environmental norms is a cause of great concern and is not expected from such a prestigious brand.

In response, the MPCB has directed its regional officer to take immediate action to ensure that the Mercedes-Benz assembly plant located on the outskirts of Pune follows all MPCB guidelines. This will include a comprehensive review of the plant’s operations and necessary corrective measures. As an immediate action, the MPCB has seized the carmaker’s bank guarantee of Rs 25 lakh.

Speaking on this development, MPCB Chairman Siddhesh Kadam said, “We are committed to maintaining and ensuring high environmental standards. All industrial activities within our jurisdiction follow pollution control norms. We expect full cooperation from Mercedes-Benz to resolve these issues at the earliest.

Mercedes-Benz is a global leader in the automotive sector and one of the largest companies in the luxury segment of the Indian automobile market. The company has released its official statement. Which states that Mercedes-Benz is in its 30th year of operations in India. The state-of-the-art manufacturing facility at Chakan is in its 15th year of operations. Which is a benchmark in automobile manufacturing in India.

The statement further said the company adheres to the strictest global standards in production quality. It places high priority on maintaining good environmental and sustainability practices and complying with mandatory regulations and requirements. The German brand said it has not received any written notice or formal request from MPCB outlining the alleged violations.
