Vastu Shastra plays an important role in designing homes that promote health, wealth, and prosperity. Every house that faces a direction has its own set of Vastu principles, and a west-facing house is no exception. Many people believe that west-facing houses are less auspicious, but this is a mistake. Here are ten essential Vastu tips for those who live in a west-facing house or are planning to build one.

1. Location of the main entrance

The main entrance is the most important element of Vastu for any house. In case of a west-facing house, the entrance should ideally be on the third, fourth, fifth or sixth pada (step) of the western wall. These padas are considered very auspicious and allow positive energy to enter the house. Avoid placing the main door on the first, second, seventh, eighth or ninth padas as these are believed to attract negative energies.

2. Living room design

The living room of a west-facing house should face either North-East, North-West or North. This placement allows the room to receive ample natural light, creating a bright and welcoming ambiance. Make sure that the seating arrangement in the living room is positioned in such a way that when guests sit, they face East or North, which is considered beneficial as per Vastu.

3. Kitchen position

In a west-facing house, the kitchen should be located in the southeast corner. The southeast is ruled by the fire element, making it the ideal place for cooking. Alternatively, the northwest corner is also acceptable if the southeast is not feasible. While cooking, the cook should ideally face the east to enhance the flow of positive energy and ensure the well-being of the home.

4. Bedroom location

The master bedroom should be located in the southwest corner of the house. This placement is believed to enhance stability and promote a sense of security for the occupants. For children’s bedrooms, the west or northwest corner is considered auspicious as it promotes good health and academic success. Guest bedrooms can be located in the northwest corner, which is suitable for fostering harmonious relationships.

5. Location of bathrooms and toilets

Bathrooms and toilets should be placed in the northwest or southeast corners of the house. The northwest corner is associated with the air element, which helps in removing waste smoothly. The southeast corner is also considered acceptable. However, avoid placing bathrooms in the northeast corner as it can disrupt the flow of positive energy and lead to health problems.

6. Location of Pooja Room

The pooja room or meditation area should ideally be in the northeast corner of the house. This direction is associated with divine energies and is considered the most sacred part of the house. The pooja room can also be in the east direction if the northeast direction is not available. Make sure that the idols or religious symbols are oriented towards the east or west for maximum spiritual benefit.

7. Staircase direction

If your west-facing house has multiple floors, then it is ideal to place the staircase in the south, southwest or west directions. A staircase in these directions promotes positive energy and prevents the flow of negative energy. Avoid building stairs in the northeast corner as it is considered inauspicious and can lead to financial difficulties and health problems.

8. Balcony and open spaces

Balconies and open spaces of a west-facing house should be located in the north or northeast directions. This placement allows maximum entry of sunlight and fresh air, contributing to a healthy and vibrant living environment. Balconies in the southwest corner should be avoided as they can cause an imbalance in the energy distribution inside the house.

9. Placement of water tanks

The elevated water tank in a west facing house should be located in the southwest corner. This is the heaviest corner and is ideal for placing elevated tanks. Underground water tanks, bore wells or any other water storage should be located in the northeast corner to balance the water element and attract prosperity and good health.

10. Location of the garden and plants

In case of west-facing houses, gardens and plants should be placed in the north or east directions. Planting small flowering plants in these directions can enhance the aesthetic appeal of the house and bring in positive energy. Avoid planting large trees in the west or southwest corners as they can block sunlight and hamper the flow of positive energy.
