12 dead and 33 injured when a bus carrying university students crashes on a highway in Egypt

Cairo: At least 12 people were killed and 33 others injured after a bus carrying university students crashed and overturned on a highway in northeastern Egypt. The Egyptian Health Ministry said Monday that the incident took place on the Ain Sokhna highway.

Students from Suez-based Galala University were on board and returning home along the Ain Sokhna Highway when the accident occurred. The ministry did not reveal what caused the accident.

The statement said 28 ambulances responded to the scene and transported the injured to the Suez Medical Complex, but did not reveal their condition.

Fatal traffic accidents claim thousands of lives each year in Egypt, which has a poor transport safety record. Speeding, poor roads, and inadequate enforcement of traffic laws are the leading causes of collisions.
