The Nagaland government has announced compensation of four lakh each to the families of six people who died on National Highway 29 (Dimapur-Kohima) due to “large-scale destruction” caused by incessant rains and landslides.

As per Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) norms, 16,000 dollars will be given to the three injured persons, Deputy Chief Minister Zeliang said.

Following Wednesday’s casualties, Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio took stock of the situation and urged people to heed official warnings.

“I have called a meeting and assessed the situation of the disaster on NH-29 which has claimed 6 lives. I urge the citizens to heed the official advisories. The Government is providing emergency and ex-gratia services. I extend my deepest condolences to the families of the deceased,” the CM posted on X.

“I am deeply concerned about the large-scale destruction on NH-29 caused by incessant rains. Authorities are at the spot assessing the situation & helping those affected. State Government will continue to seek with GoI & @nhidcl for immediate measures & restore normalcy at the earliest,” the CM said on X. Nagaland Deputy Chief Minister Zeliang said that the State Government has directed the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) to release ex-gratia to the families of the deceased & injured immediately through respective District Disaster Management Authority (DDMAS).

He said that compensation of four lakh will be given to each family of the deceased, while sixteen thousand will be given to the injured people as per NSDMA norms.

Zeliang expressed his anguish over the unfortunate incident which resulted in the death of six people, saying: “We extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved families of the six people and wish a speedy recovery to the three injured people who are currently in hospital.”

Zeliang said since there is no other alternative route for heavy vehicle traffic, the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) has been directed to make NH-29 operational within 24 hours to ensure that supply of essential commodities like food is not adversely affected.
