67-year-old man undergoes surgery to remove denture from stomach
The artificial denture was successfully removed from the stomach of a 67-year-old man at a hospital in Delhi. The patient had accidentally swallowed the denture while eating. The team of doctors evaluated the case and removed the denture using multiple endoscopic procedures.
The entire procedure took 15 minutes to remove the prosthesis from the patient’s stomach and was carried out at Fortis Vasant Kunj Hospital. The team of doctors was led by Dr Shubham Vatsya, Director of Gastroenterology and Hepatobiliary Sciences at the hospital. The prosthesis was inserted into the stomach and retrieved from the body with the help of a Roth net. This is a device used to remove foreign objects from the body. The patient was discharged on the same day in a stable condition.
On admission, the patient complained of severe pain in his throat and mid-chest. Upon examination, it was discovered that the denture was stuck in the patient’s stomach, with wounds and bleeding in the esophagus and stomach area. The team of doctors meticulously removed the denture and saved the patient’s life. Doctors say any delay in diagnosing and removing the denture could have led to multiple life-threatening situations and could have also resulted in death.
Dr Shubham Vatsya commented on the details of the case, “The denture was 15 cm in circumference and due to its size, it was difficult to remove. However, the procedure was performed under IV sedation and we removed the denture using multiple gastrointestinal endoscopies. During the procedure, the denture was introduced into the stomach and retrieved from the body with the help of a Roth net, which is a device used to remove foreign objects from the body. The patient was discharged on the same day and is currently doing well. If the denture had not been removed in time, it could have led to multiple life-threatening situations such as stomach or intestinal perforation which could have been fatal.”
