Speaking to CNN, Xuan-Mai Nguyen, lead author of a new, unpublished study analyzing data on US veterans and a health sciences specialist with the Million Veteran Program at the VA Boston Healthcare System, said: “Doing all eight had a synergistic effect, kind of an extra boost to prolong life, but even small changes made a difference.”

Although the study is based on American veterans, these simple lifestyle changes can help anyone who wants to live longer.

“We looked at whether people did light, moderate or vigorous activity versus doing nothing and just sitting on the couch,” Nguyen said. “The people who lived the longest were doing 7.5 hours of metabolic equivalent exercise a week. Just to give you a reference: If you can walk up a flight of stairs without getting out of breath, that’s four minutes out of 7.5 hours.”

Avoid substance abuse: In recent times, drug use seems to have increased and is now the second most common cause of a shorter life. If you want to live longer and achieve more in life, stay away from this addiction.

Refrain from using tobacco: Smoking or using tobacco in any form significantly increases the risk of reduced life expectancy.
