Andaman Islands e-visa to boost tourism

The Ministry of Home Affairs has recently designated the Port Blair seaport in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands as an authorised integrated check post for foreign nationals holding e-visas. This important development will significantly enhance the tourist appeal of the region.

E-Visa facility for added convenience

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands, renowned for their pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters and rich marine life, are now more accessible than ever before. Port Blair’s new e-visa system is expected to attract a greater influx of international visitors to this idyllic archipelago.

Tourism Secretary Vishwendra noted that the optimum period for chartering a yacht in the region is from October to May, when the sea is calm and weather conditions are favourable for maritime adventures. With Port Blair joining the ranks of India’s major seaports for e-visa entry (along with Mumbai, Cochin, Mormugao, Chennai and New Mangalore), the process for international tourists has been greatly simplified.

Hopes for the potential of the electronic visa

Local officials have welcomed this development. Prashant Kumar, former chief manager of the port, highlighted the thorough review undertaken by the Ministry of Home Affairs prior to this decision. Devesh Chandra Srivastava, director general of police, expressed optimism about the potential of the e-visa to boost the status of the Andaman Islands on the international tourism map and improve opportunities for yacht tourism.

In a bid to capitalise on this new gateway, a delegation from the Association of Andaman Tour Operators (AATO) recently promoted the islands at the India International Travel Mart in Bengaluru. Their efforts highlight the Andamans as an increasingly attractive destination for yacht charter and adventure tourism.
