For the first time, a night drill was conducted to strengthen emergency preparedness at CPP-1

Rourkela. Fire broke out for the first time at the Cable Basement on Friday to strengthen emergency preparedness to deal with any possible incident at the Power and Blowing Station (PBS) of Captive Power Plant-1 (CPP-1) of Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP). A surprise drill was organised in the evening. As per the legal requirement, this exercise was conducted to assess the effectiveness of the disaster management system at the RSP site and its associated personnel. The drill started at 00:42 hrs and the situation was declared under control at 01:15 hrs by the Site Incident Controller, General Manager in Charge (CPP-1) KS Virdi. The entire group was divided into three teams. Combat team, Rescue team and Support team. All the teams performed well and completed the exercise within 33 minutes.

Senior RSP officials inspected

The drill was conducted by General Manager (CPP-1, Operation & Maintenance) NC Parida, General Manager (CPP-1, Electrical) BV Dash, Deputy General Manager (Fire Services) MI Sonkusare and Security, Fire Services, OHSC, CISF and CPP-1 many senior officers witnessed it first hand. The CISF team played a vital role in the exercise by cordoning off the area for safe execution of the entire exercise and maintaining harmony. At the end of the exercise, a review was conducted by General Manager (Operation & Maintenance) CPP-1, General Manager (CPP-1 Electrical) and Assistant General Manager (Fire Services).

Suggestions given for further improvement in some areas

The senior officers appreciated the entire exercise and gave suggestions for future improvements in some areas. The entire exercise was coordinated by Senior Manager and Departmental Security Officer (CPP-1) Raghuveer Singh under the guidance of Mr. Virdi, Mr. Parida and Mr. Dash. The collective participants from PBS, CPP-1 and all concerned departments enthusiastically participated in the successful conduct of the exercise.
