Former External Affairs Minister K. Natwar Singh has passed away after a prolonged illness, family sources said on Sunday. Singh, 93, passed away at Gurugram’s Medanta Hospital, where he had been undergoing treatment for the past two weeks, they said.

“His son is in hospital and many other family members are arriving in Delhi from his home state to receive the last rites scheduled in Delhi. He had been unwell for some time,” a family source said. He died on Saturday evening, according to the source.

Singh, a former Congress MP, served as India’s External Affairs Minister during the 2004-05 period under the UPA-I government led by then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Born in 1931 in Rajasthan’s Bharatpur district, Singh was a veteran diplomat who brought a wealth of diplomatic experience to his political career. The Congress leader was also a prolific author of articles on subjects ranging from the life of a maharaja to the nuances of foreign affairs.

He is the author of several books, including Nehru’s Legacy: A Memorial Tribute and My China Diary 1956-88. His autobiography is titled One Life Is Not Enough.

In 1984, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1984 for his service to the nation.
