Once again a painful news has come out from Myanmar about the Rohingyas. Rohingyas fleeing the country to Bangladesh have been attacked through drones. More than 200 people are reported to have been killed in this. This includes women, children and entire families. According to a Reuters report, eyewitnesses said that people were seen turning over piles of dead bodies to search for their loved ones. Witnesses, activists and a diplomat, referring to this drone attack on Monday, said that this attack took place on the border with neighboring country Bangladesh.
Officials called it the most dangerous attack in Rakhine province and said that a pregnant woman and her 2-year-old daughter also died in this attack. The militia and the Myanmar army blamed each other for this attack. It is alleged that this attack took place when people were waiting to cross the Bangladesh border.
Dead bodies are seen soaked in mud
According to the report, videos posted on social media showed piles of bodies scattered on muddy ground with their suitcases and backpacks lying around them. Three survivors said more than 200 people had died, while another person said more than 70 people had died.
According to a Reuters report, the attack took place just outside the Myanmar coastal town of Maungdaw. A witness, 35-year-old Mohammad Ilyas, said his pregnant wife and 2-year-old daughter were injured in the attack and later died. Ilyas said he was standing with them on the beach when the drones began attacking the crowd.
Who are Rohingya Muslims?
In fact, the dispute between Rohingya Muslims and the majority Buddhist community of Myanmar has been going on since Myanmar gained independence in 1948. It is said that Muslims have been living in Rakhine state, also known as Arakan, since the 16th century. This was the period when Myanmar was under British rule. When the first Anglo-Burmese war ended in 1826, British rule was established over Arakan.
During this time, the British rulers started bringing workers from Bangladesh to Arakan. In this way, the number of people coming from the neighboring country Bangladesh to Rakhine in Myanmar kept increasing. These people who migrated from Bangladesh to Rakhine were the same people who are known today as Rohingya Muslims. Seeing the increasing number of Rohingyas, Myanmar’s General Ne Win’s government implemented Burma’s national law in 1982. Under this law, the citizenship of Rohingya Muslims was revoked. Since then, these Rohingya Muslims have been fighting for their existence in many countries.
