1. Before 1947, Congress celebrated Independence Day on January 26, when people took an “oath of independence.”
2. The Indian Independence Act came into force on this day in 1947.
3. Hasrat Mohani was the first to demand complete independence in the 1929 session of the Indian National Congress (INC).
4. Following the Declaration of “Purna Swaraj”, January 26 was declared by Congress as “Independence Day” in 1930.
5. India did not have a national anthem at the time of its independence until Jana Gana Mana, written by Rabindranath Tagore in 1911, was adopted by the Constituent Assembly in 1950.
6. India was not a Republic immediately after independence, as it was then known as the “Dominion of India”, until the constitution came into effect on 26 January and marked India’s transition into a Republic.
7. Viceroy Mountbatten brought forward the date of the transfer of power to 15 August, the second anniversary of Japan’s surrender in World War II.
8. King George VI was head of state until India’s transition to a republic, that is, when the Constitution of India came into force on 26 January 1950.
9. British Prime Minister Clement Attlee had initially announced that the British government would grant self-government to India in June 1948.
10. India’s independence was marked by the famous “Rendezvous with Destiny” speech delivered by India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru around midnight on 14 August.
