In a significant incident, the Cochin International Airport said that a passenger was detained on Sunday (August 11) after he made an alarming comment regarding security to a CISF officer. In a statement released, the airport authorities identified the detained man as Manoj Kumar, 42, who was scheduled to fly from Kochi (COK) to Mumbai (BOM) on Air India flight AI 682. However, he was stopped by the authorities at the X-ray Baggage Screening System (XBIS) checkpoint after he made a comment to a CISF officer, asking, “Is there a bomb in my bag?”

‘About the incident’

In a statement, Cochin International Airport said the comment raised immediate concern among authorities, prompting a thorough inspection of the passenger cabin and checked baggage. A bomb detection and disposal team (BDDS) was called in and after thorough checks, no threat was found.

“During the pre-boarding security check, Mr Kumar asked the CISF officer, ‘Is there a bomb in my bag?’ This statement triggered immediate concern and prompted the airport security to take swift action. The passenger cabin and the checked baggage were thoroughly inspected by the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS). After completing the necessary checks, no threat was revealed,” the airport statement said.

Meanwhile, it is important to note that after the inspection, Kumar was handed over to the local police for further investigation, while the scheduled flight to Mumbai departed on time.

An airman carrying a nuclear bomb was arrested at a security checkpoint at Delhi airport

Notably, this incident comes after a similar case reported in April, when two men travelling from Delhi to Ahmedabad were stopped at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport after one of them, frustrated by an extra layer of security screening, claimed they were carrying a nuclear bomb. The duo, hailing from Rajkot, were not arrested but were tied up, meaning they would have to appear before the investigating officer when required.
