Congress leaders on Sunday expressed condolences over the demise of former External Affairs Minister K Natwar Singh with party chief Mallikarjun Kharge hailing his profound contribution to India’s diplomacy and foreign affairs.
Singh passed away on Saturday evening after a prolonged illness, family sources said. He was 93.
He died at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram, near Delhi, where he had been admitted for the past two weeks, they said.
“Our deepest condolences on the demise of former Union Minister Shri K. Natwar Singh ji. An acclaimed intellectual and Padma Bhushan awardee, he made a profound contribution to Indian diplomacy and foreign affairs,” Kharge said in a post on X.
“Our thoughts are with his family, friends and supporters,” he said.
Congress general secretary in charge of communications Jairam Ramesh said: “He is a highly engaging political personality. A distinguished foreign service officer. A well-read man of letters and a noted author with some classics to his credit. A walking encyclopaedia of the worlds of Nehru and Indira Gandhi. A charming conversationalist, storyteller and quick-witted.”
“A man whose correspondence with various men and women is the stuff of history. A wonderful friend and generous with his hospitality, his ever-sharp memory and his deep archive. Natwar Singh was all these and much more,” Ramesh said.
“He has just passed away after leading a full and nuanced life. He was someone who truly left his ‘footprints in the sands of time,'” he said in X.
