Rumour of fire at Punjab Mail, 20 passengers injured in stampede

Lucknow: There was panic among the passengers due to rumour of fire in the general coach of Punjab Mail going from Howrah to Amritsar at Shahjahanpur, UP (UP News). The passengers jumped out of the coach and started running away without thinking. More than 20 passengers were injured due to this. The condition of seven of these passengers is said to be critical. The incident took place between Bareilly and Miranpur Katra stations at 8 am on Sunday. The train was stopped due to the rumour. Only then people jumped out of the coach and started running away.

Rumor spread while operating a fire extinguisher

According to the Senior MCD of Moradabad Railway Division, some mischievous elements had activated the fire extinguisher kept in the general coach of 13006 Punjab Mail. Due to this the train was stopped. Due to the sudden stoppage of the train and the rumour of fire, passengers started jumping out of the coach and running away. When the train stopped, half of its bogies were on the river bridge and the other half were outside. The passengers were injured while jumping out of the coach. Some injured were given first aid on the spot. Investigation revealed that there was no fire and the train continued ahead. But before that the train stopped for half an hour. The train reached Shahjahanpur at around 10.10 am. The railway and RPF staff present there removed the injured passengers from the train. They were sent to the hospital by ambulance. Seven seriously injured passengers have been admitted to the medical college.
