Kyiv: Ukraine President Volodymyr ZelenskyFor the first time, he admitted on Saturday that his forces were fighting in Russia‘s Kursk region, according to a report.
Ukraine’s president said the operation in Kursk was part of his country’s effort to restore peace after the Russian invasion in 2022, Reuters reported.
Russia reported that Ukrainian forces advanced into the Kursk region on Tuesday. Russian military bloggers confirmed some progress by Ukrainian troops, but noted that the situation has since stabilized.
In his evening video address, the president said he had discussed the operation with top Ukrainian commander Oleksandr Syrskyi, though he also acknowledged the ongoing challenges facing troops on the tough eastern front.
“Today I received several reports from Commander-in-Chief Syrskyi about the front lines and our actions to push the war into the aggressor’s territory,” he said, Reuters reported.
“I thank all units of the defence forces for doing so. Ukraine is proving that it can really restore justice and exert the necessary pressure on the aggressor.”
Zelenskyy had previously hinted at the operation, praising the military’s ability to “surprise” and expressing gratitude for capturing Russian soldiers for use in future negotiations, referring specifically to last week.
Paying tribute to Ukrainian forces along the 1,000-kilometer front line, Zelenskyy drew attention to the situation in northern Sumy, which borders Russia’s Kursk region.
In response, Russia has stepped up its use of guided bombs and other airstrikes in Sumy, prompting widespread evacuations.
