The Paris 2024 Olympic Games had a fascinating finale on Sunday, August 11. The last sporting event contested at the Games was the women’s basketball gold medal match between the series winners, the United States, and the hosts, France.

The match was a close one, with the United States narrowly beating France (66-65) to win their eighth consecutive gold medal in women’s basketball at the Games. This victory not only gave the United States the gold, but also secured them the top spot in the medal table at the Paris Games.

Nations that will finish in the top 10 in the medal table at the Paris Olympics

1 – The United States finished on top of the medal table with a total of 126 medals. The country won 40 golds, 44 silvers and 42 bronzes. Athletics gave the United States the most medals: 34.

2. The People’s Republic of China narrowly missed out on the top spot. China has won 91 medals, but if it had won one more, it would have topped the rankings. China won a total of 40 gold medals, 27 silver and 24 bronze. Swimming was the discipline that brought it the most medals: 12.

3. Japan secured third place with a total of 45 medals. It won 20 golds, 12 silvers and 13 bronzes. Japan won 12 medals (the most ever) in wrestling.

4. Australia is ranked fourth. It has a total of 53 medals, but it does not have the number of gold medals that Japan has. The Australians won 18 golds, 19 silvers and 16 bronzes.

5 – Host country France had its second best medal haul with a total of 64 medals. France claimed 16 golds, 26 silvers and 22 bronzes. Judo gave the hosts 10 medals, the most ever won by them.

6. The Netherlands finished outside the top five, in sixth place. The Dutch contingent took home 34 medals: 15 gold, 7 silver and 12 bronze.

7 – Great Britain took home 65 medals in total. They won 14 golds, 22 silvers and 29 bronzes. Athletics was the sport that brought the most medals to Great Britain.

8. The Republic of Korea won a total of 32 medals. The Korean nation took home 13 gold medals, 9 silver medals and 10 bronze medals, with archery being the sport that won the most medals (7).

9. Italy made the top 10. Italy’s medal total of 40 included 12 gold, 13 silver and 15 bronze. Swimming and fencing were the most prolific sports, each awarding five medals.

10 – Germany won a total of 33 medals, including 12 gold, 13 silver and 8 bronze. The most successful sporting discipline for the Germans was equestrian, with five medals.

India finished 71st in the medal standings, with five bronze and one silver medal.
