Extensive search operations in Wayanad to find those still missing following recent landslides in the hilly district were halted on Sunday following heavy rains in Mundakkai and Chooralmala regions.

The Cabinet sub-committee members, who met the media, said a detailed search will be carried out on August 12 and 13 to find those missing in the devastating landslides in Wayanad.

State Minister PA Mohammed Riyas said a 190-member team comprising NDRF, police, fire brigade, Civil Defence Force, Forest Department and rescue workers among others will be involved in the search operation in five zones.

He said a total of 253 rental houses have been identified to rehabilitate the landslide survivors.

“The rehabilitation process will be carried out only after consultation with the survivors. Eighteen teams are currently conducting surveys in the 14 relief camps. Survivors can choose the panchayat of their choice,” the minister added.

Basic furniture and other household appliances will be provided, he said.

The cabinet subcommittee also said that a total of 2,000 people, including families and survivors of the disaster, took part in the massive search operation on Sunday.

Three body parts were recovered from the Kanthanpara forest region.

According to the state government, the landslides have killed 229 people and more than 130 are still missing. The minister said 51 bodies have yet to be identified.

There are currently 1,770 people housed in 15 relief camps, including 673 women and 439 children.

The Local Self-Government Department (LSGD) will hold a special camp on Monday in disaster-hit regions to recover official documents, including identity cards, from survivors who have lost everything.

Search operations took a break on Friday afternoon as the area was handed over to the SPG in view of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the disaster-hit Mundakkai and Chooralmala regions on Saturday.
