The tragic story
In 2011, Sushil Kumar was a humble computer operator and teacher in Bihar, earning barely enough to make ends meet. When he won the KBC, he instantly became a national sensation. But fame and fortune, as they say, can be double-edged swords. He began battling alcoholism, and soon, the Rs 50 crore prize money went up in smoke. Yes, you read that right – it went up in smoke completely. Sushil found himself broke, battling not just financial ruin but also the demons of addiction. Sushil had revealed all this in a Facebook post that went viral in no time.
Kumar wrote, “2015-2016 was the most difficult period of my life. I didn’t know what to do. I was a local celebrity and I was attending shows for 10 or even 15 days a month somewhere in Bihar. I was staying away from studies. And since I was a local celebrity, I was very serious about the media in those days. Sometimes journalists would interview me and write about me. Without any experience on how I should talk to them, I would tell them about the business so that I wouldn’t look like a jobless person. However, those businesses would go under within a few days.”
Sushil’s lack of financial advice led him to make reckless investments and donations. In fact, he not only became a philanthropist, but he became addicted to making “secret donations.” He would attend thousands of events in a month and people would take advantage of him, taking advantage of his generosity.
The downward spiral got even worse when Sushil Kumar associated with a crowd that made him addicted to alcohol and tobacco. This led to a cycle of addiction. This particular company made him feel inadequate, which pushed him further into substance abuse as Sushil found it as a coping mechanism.
“Due to the nature of my business, I came in contact with a few media students. I was also introduced to a few theatre artists. However, whenever these students and artists spoke on a topic, I felt intimidated and realised that I did not know much about those topics or subjects. Gradually, I became addicted to alcohol and tobacco, besides other addictions. Whenever I stayed in Delhi for a week, I would drink and smoke with seven different groups. I found their talks attractive. In their company, I started taking media very lightly,” wrote Sushil.
Sushil Kumar ended up bankrupt. He survived by selling milk. Once he ran out of money, he was no longer invited to events.
Sushil Kumar eventually changed his mind and decided to focus on education. He became a teacher.
