Bangladesh’s new home minister says no plans to ban Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League, apologises to Hindus | World News

Bangladesh’s new home adviser, retired Brigadier General M. Sakhawat, said on Monday that the interim government in power has no intention of banning the Awami League party, formerly led by Sheikh Hasina, AFP reports. “The party has made a lot of contributions to Bangladesh, we acknowledge that,” Sakhawat Hossain told reporters. “They should participate in elections when the time comes.”

On Sunday, Home Minister Sakhawat Hossain apologized to the Hindu community for failing to protect them adequately. He said the Muslim majority has a duty to protect the Hindu minority and acknowledged that this responsibility has not been fulfilled. He assured the community that they will continue to receive protection in the future and expressed hope that the situation will improve.

Meanwhile, the protesting Bangladesh police personnel agreed to call off their strike after a meeting with the caretaker government’s home affairs adviser Hossain on Sunday and announced the withdrawal of the strike.

Police have received confirmation that most of their 11-point demands are likely to be met.

During the meeting, it was decided that the protesting non-police officers would return to their posts from Monday. A member of the inquiry committee, set up by Inspector General of Police Asaduzzaman Jewel, said, “The Home Affairs Adviser has given us his word and in response, we will put on our uniforms and return to our posts from Monday.”

Home Affairs Adviser Sakhawat announced that those responsible for ordering the excessive use of force would face consequences and a thorough investigation would be launched. He also proposed the creation of a police commission to ensure the autonomy of the police and its freedom from political influence.
