Fatal weekend shootings rock sprawling Denver-area suburb

DenverFour men were shot and killed and a woman was hospitalized with gunshot wounds during a wave of violence over the weekend in the Denver suburb of Commerce City. A person of interest in one of the cases was later found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said Sunday.

Also in the Denver area over the weekend, one person was fatally shot and three others were injured during two separate altercations Sunday in the city of Aurora.

In Denver, one person was killed and six injured in a series of shootings and stabbings over the weekend, police said.

Commerce City Police Department spokeswoman Joanna Small described it as “an incredibly violent weekend” for the rapidly expanding community of about 70,000 people, which is northeast of Denver near the city’s airport.

“We average five or six homicides a year,” he said. “Now we’re talking about four homicides and one person in critical condition in 39 hours. … The fact that the crimes are not related is even more disconcerting, actually.” No possible motives for the shootings were released.

The first occurred Friday night in the parking lot of a Commerce City 7-Eleven store. A man and a woman were shot and the man later died. The woman remained hospitalized in critical condition as of Sunday morning, Small said.

Officers later attempted to contact a man driving a truck involved in the shooting, but he fled and was found dead as a result of suicide Sunday morning.

On Saturday night, a man was fatally shot in the parking lot of a public park with a pool in Commerce City. One person was arrested, but Small declined to provide further details.

Later that night, officers responded to gunfire during a shooting that was detected by Commerce City’s gunshot monitoring system. Officers found a stolen vehicle with three people who fled and then crashed, according to authorities. A male passenger with a gunshot wound was found dead inside the vehicle.

A second passenger and the driver were injured in the crash and were taken into custody. Officers who returned to the scene of the shooting found a man who had been shot to death in the yard of a residence, Small said.

The victims and others involved in that case are believed to have been minors, he said.

There was no known connection between the shootings at the store, the park and the residential neighborhood, Small said. He declined to elaborate, citing pending investigations.

The fatal Aurora shooting happened about 2 a.m. in a nightclub parking lot, police said. Details about the deceased were not immediately released. A second victim, a 34-year-old man, was shot multiple times but made it to the hospital on his own and is expected to survive, police said. No arrests have been made.

Around the same time, a shooting occurred at an Aurora housing complex that left one man hospitalized with life-threatening injuries, police said. A second man who was stabbed in that incident is expected to survive, according to police.
