Mamata Banerjee said she might transfer the case to the CBI
Calcutta: West Bengal Chief Minister Mama Banerjee The Chief Minister has given a stern warning to the police over the rape and murder of a 31-year-old junior doctor of R. G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The Chief Minister said that the investigation will be transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).CBI) if the Kolkata Police is unable to solve the case by Sunday.
“We have deployed a canine team, video department and forensic department to investigate the matter. If the Kolkata police is unable to solve the case by Sunday, we will transfer it to the CBI,” he said.
“This is an extremely painful incident. Whoever is involved in the case must be punished immediately. We want this case to be resolved quickly because then the judicial process will be faster. I was surprised that the incident happened despite the presence of nurses and security personnel at the hospital,” he added.
“I have told the police that the victim’s parents have also said that someone from within is involved. We have expelled the director, department head, medical superintendent and deputy director (MSVP) and ASP from this hospital,” he said.
Meanwhile, the medical body has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah demanding action against the officials.
What the Police Commissioner said
Earlier, Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal, speaking after Banerjee’s deadline, outlined the steps being taken by the police to solve this crime.
“We are sure… in the next four to five days, if there are more culprits, we will be able to arrest them,” he said, “We have launched a helpline… doctors can give information by calling (and) they can communicate anonymously… if they have suspicions.”
“We are in touch with the family members. We will remain in touch and share the developments with them… If even after that the family is not satisfied, then whatever the lady (Ms Banerjee) has said will be done,” he said.
The doctor was found on Friday morning in the seminar room of the state hospital. The initial autopsy report indicates that the victim was bleeding from the eyes, mouth and private parts, as well as from the left leg, neck, right hand, ring finger and lips.
Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer who frequented the hospital, was arrested in connection with the crime. The incident triggered nationwide protests by doctors and the political opposition.
