Chief Minister of West Bengal Mama Banerjee On Monday, she met the family and parents of the postgraduate doctor who was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on Friday.
Banerjee reached the victim’s residence around 12.45 pm and spoke to her parents and relatives.
Resident doctors across India have staged major protests, suspending all elective services and demanding justice for the victim and transfer of the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The victim’s body was discovered in a seminar room at the hospital on Friday morning.
A civic volunteer, identified as Sanjay Roy, was arrested on Saturday. In view of the protests, several hospitals cancelled the licenses of senior doctors to manage the influx of patients.
Updates on the case related to the rape and murder of a junior doctor from Kolkata:
1) Ten government hospitals in Delhi went on an indefinite strike on Monday in response to the incident. Among those participating in the protests are AIIMS Delhi, Safdarjung Hospital, Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital, GTB, as well as IHBAS and Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar Medical College.
2) CM Banerjee on Monday said she would hand over the case to the CBI if the Kolkata police fail to solve it by Sunday.
3) As protests over the case entered their fourth day, Sandip Ghosh, the principal of the state university where the incident took place, resigned on Monday morning.
4) On Sunday, Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Kumar Goyal said that the autopsy report had been handed over to the family. Also, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Chandan Guha), who was on duty on the night of the incident, has been removed from his post. An investigative team is probing the case.
5) Meanwhile, the incident has triggered a political storm in Bengal between the ruling Trinamool Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party. Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar on Sunday demanded a CBI probe into the incident as the police had initially termed the case as a suicide.
According to local media reports, the accused has a history of problematic behavior, including being involved in street catcalling incidents and scamming a close friend out of money.
