New Delhi: Hundreds of resident doctors on Monday suspended their regular work and staged a peaceful demonstration in Kolkata to protest against the recent rape and murder of a postgraduate doctor. The protest coincided with the nationwide strike called by the Federation of Resident Doctors Associations (FORDA) against the sexual assault and murder of the doctor-trainee whose body was found inside a seminar room of the hospital on Friday morning.
Doctors wearing black armbands shouted slogans demanding justice for the victim. They demonstrated in front of the Super Specialty Hospital with signs that read in some cases “we stand in solidarity with the victim”, “there is no mercy for rapists” and “raise your voice before you become the next victim”. The doctors’ strike affected work in hospitals associated with government medical schools, but emergency services continued without interruption.
“I have not been able to sleep for the past two days after receiving this heartbreaking news about the brutal rape and murder of the innocent doctor. Moreover, we work night shifts and do not feel safe due to lack of proper security measures,” said a doctor. She said the government should come up with a comprehensive safety plan inside the emergency wards and other parts of the hospital to restore the confidence of doctors.
“From time to time, we doctors face unruly visitors and it is the duty of the government to ensure a safe environment for us as we spend more time in hospitals than at home,” he said. Anil Sharma, another doctor, said they are on the streets as part of the nationwide protest to press for the death penalty for the rapist.
“We provide healthcare services to the people and we want our government to ensure our safety at the workplace,” he said. Showing a sign that read “hands that heal should not bleed,” a doctor said they face security issues, especially during night hours when there are no security guards.
