Investor says ’25 lakhs salary is too little to support a family’, netizens suggest ‘get tested’

A post by an investor who claims that Rs 25 lakh a year salary The fact that the minimum wage of a three-member family is insufficient to support a three-member family has triggered a debate on social media. In a post on X, Sourav Dutta argued that a salary of 25 LPA translates to a take-home pay of about Rs 1.5 lakh per month, which he believes is insufficient given the rising cost of living. To illustrate his point, Dutta broke down his calculations, suggesting that essential expenses such as rent or monthly installments, food and utilities would consume nearly Rs 1 lakh. He then pointed out that Rs 25,000 would normally be spent on dining out, entertainment and small trips, and another Rs 25,000 would be kept aside for medical emergencies and other unforeseen expenses.

Dutta concluded that this leaves no room for savings or investment, saying, “25 LPA is too little to sustain a family. 25 LPA = 1.5 L in hand per month. A family of 3 would spend 1 L on essentials, monthly installments/rent. 25,000 on eating out, watching movies, OTT, day trips. 25,000 for emergencies and healthcare. Nothing left for investment.”

The tweet has generated a flurry of responses online, with opinions sharply divided. Some users argued that ₹25 LPA is still a reasonable income, while others sided with Dutta and cited inflation and rising cost of living as major concerns.

One user wrote: “Touch some weed bro, or get tested, or maybe both.”

Another commented: “A family spending $25,000 a month on ‘health insurance’ would never spend $25,000 a month on miscellaneous expenses like eating out, day trips, etc. Please don’t confuse people with ridiculous calculations.”

A third added: “Someone who earns 25 LPA and has a total of three members in the family would know perfectly well how much to spend on rent, essentials and entertainment. Absurd figures. Emergency and medical expenses are not monthly bills.”
