Woman dies in elephant attack, many houses damaged

Birmitrapur. A woman was crushed to death by an elephant in Kath Karanjia village of Kokerama Panchayat of Nuagaon block. The identity of the deceased has been declared as Savitri Gaur (54 years old). Savitri was alone in the house when this incident occurred. Her two sons had gone to work in Rourkela. According to information, a herd of elephants entered Kath Karanjia village on Saturday night. There were a total of 22 elephants in this herd. The elephants destroyed many houses. Savitri ran away from home out of fear of elephants but was crushed to death by the elephant. Out of fear of elephants, the rest of the people left their houses and ran away. After receiving the information, the Forest Department team reached the spot on Sunday morning. The villagers allege that even after being informed, the forest department officials arrived very late. The people are terrified of elephants and do not want to stay in their houses. For the past few days, elephant disturbances have been observed in Kokrama village. But the forest department is not taking any steps to chase away the elephants from other places. Due to this, there is anger among the villagers. They have demanded that the state government take cognizance of this matter and give adequate compensation to the affected people.

Elephant menace is being seen in more than half a dozen blocks of Sundargarh district. Due to this, resentment is also rising among the villagers against the forest department. Despite giving information, villagers are losing their lives many times as officials and employees of the forest department do not come at the right time. Due to fear of elephants, people are forced to live in fear. There is no such area left in the railway towns of Bandamunda, Rajgangpur, Koida, Banai and Hemgir where elephants have not come for the last one month. Despite this, the Forest Department is not finding any permanent solution. As a result, resentment against the forest department is rising among the villagers.

Banai: Villager injured in tusker attack, half a dozen houses demolished

A villager was injured in an attack by a tusker elephant that broke away from the herd last night at Sadhubhal village in Banai Forest Range area. He has been admitted to a hospital in Rourkela for treatment. Also, this elephant has destroyed half a dozen houses in this area. So the villagers are scared and the Forest Department has been demanded to find a permanent solution to this problem.
