Eighteen minutes into an interview that was supposed to begin at 8 p.m. EDT, Musk posted on X that the platform was experiencing a “massive” denial-of-service (DDOS) attack, which is a federal criminal act that involves flooding a site with data to overwhelm it and take it offline.
Outage tracker Downdetector reported an increase in reports of X being inaccessible to users starting before the interview, but it could not immediately be verified whether this was due to a malicious attack.
At 8:42 pm the interview finally began.
Trump had previously mocked Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis when his primary campaign launched with a May 2023 interview on X that was marred by glitches.
“Wow! DeSantis’ Twitter launch is a DISASTER!” Trump wrote in May 2023 on his social media channel Truth Social. “His entire campaign will be a disaster. LOOK AT HIM!”
DeSantis’ event began with technical issues that Musk said were due to servers being overloaded due to too many people trying to listen in. It went more than 20 minutes past the scheduled start time and users were kicked out, heard microphone feedback and hold music, and had to deal with other technical issues.
DeSantis dropped out of the race after a disappointing showing in Iowa’s initial primary.
